When do I send in EF and LAF Donations?

  • After recording donations, original checks from individual donors are to be immediately forwarded from the branch to:

    • Educational Fund checks should be sent to the national AAUW office, 1111 Sixteenth St NW, Washington DC 20036, with a note to the current NYS EF VP. Branch donation deadline is Dec.1 for recognition for the current year.

    • Legal Advocacy Fund checks should be sent to AAUW NYS LAF Vice President Mildred DeWitt. Mail to: AAUW Planetarium Station, PO Box 390, NYC 10024-0390. Branch donation deadline is Dec. 15 for recognition for the 2008 year.

Can't I put donations into the branch checking account and send one check?

  • To comply with IRS regulations, money raised for the AAUW Educational Fund and AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund cannot be co-mingled with dues or operating funds, or diverted for any other purpose. Use separate bank accounts.
  • In limited circumstances, you may need to process or retain for a short time Educational Fund and Legal Advocacy Fund contributions (though not generally checks written directly to the corporation). In those cases, you must maintain separate bank accounts for the Educational Foundation and Legal Advocacy Fund.

How do I acknowledge donations?

  • Only contributions submitted to the Educational Fund or the Legal Advocacy Fund may be acknowledged with an official tax receipt.
  • Branches and states cannot provide the donor with a receipt recognized by the IRS. The Educational Fund or Legal Advocacy Fund will provide the receipt.
