Start Your Own Branch

If there is no branch in your area, consider gathering some like-minded friends and colleagues to form a new branch – either a traditional, campus, or workplace branch. Call the AAUW Helpline 800-326-2289 or email helpline@aauw.org to request a New Branch Kit. Contact the state MVP or the HELPLINE for a wealth of information on AAUW, organizing a branch information team, completing the necessary paperwork, and recruiting members.

Satellites - Branch and Student

A branch satellite is a small group not desiring autonomous branch organization but interested in carrying on projects and events as part of an established AAUW branch. Close cooperation must be maintained with the established branch. Satellites may later apply to become a branch if qualified. The state MVP can provide information on this.

There are several ways to join, participate in, and benefit from AAUW.

Joining a branch as a branch member includes membership in AAUW-NYS, the Association (National), and the IFUW (International Federation of University Women). This is the best way to maximize your involvement. Most branches have their own newsletter, the state sends FOCUS quarterly, and the Association sends AAUW Outlook. If you are a member and don’t receive Outlook, contact the state membership vice president.

Members can belong to more than one branch by becoming a dual member. They pay full dues to one branch and branch dues only to the other, if different states are involved, state dues are paid to each state. Association dues are paid once.

Any member may become a paid life member by paying 20 times the current Association dues. State and branch dues are still due.

If there isn’t a branch near you, join as an Individual Member (Member-at-Large) of the Association, without a branch affiliation. Individual Members receive Association publications only.

Student Affiliates are undergraduates who belong as an affiliate (not a full member). This is a good way to participate in AAUW while paying a reduced rate. Affiliates can attend branch, state, and Association functions, and receive all publications.

Institutions of higher learning can partner with AAUW by becoming College/University Members and paying dues on a sliding scale depending on size. Association dues for C/U Representatives are included; the representatives may become branch members by paying state and branch dues.

Some women had life circumstances preventing them from achieving a baccalaureate degree making them ineligible for regular membership but who believe in and are willing to support the mission of AAUW. Some individual branches have opted to welcome these women as Community Partners, setting their own fees and conditions. Partners are not eligible to hold office and the Association recommends that they not exceed 20% of branch membership. Contact individual branches for information.

AAUW members can give free 12-month memberships in the Association to recent college graduates through the Association's Give-a-Grad-a-Gift program. Daughters, nieces, granddaughters, friends, and co-workers will truly appreciate this special and valuable graduation gift.

Anyone who has been a member of AAUW for 50 years is eligible for honorary membership. Honorary Members do not pay Association or NYS dues and many branches waive local dues. An application form can be obtained from the Helpline 800-326-2289 or helpline@aauw.org.
