AAUW's Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to combat sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace.

LAF works to combat sex discrimination through community and campus outreach programs, a resource library and online advocacy tools, and various research reports. In collaboration with the Public Policy and Government Relations department, LAF seeks amicus curiae opportunities in cases of discrimination that disadvantage women in the workplace. LAF is also transitioning toward supporting landmark sex discrimination cases that have the potential to make a difference for all women.

Important U.S. Supreme Court Case
AAUW signed an amicus curiae brief in support of Noreen Hulteen in AT&T v Hulteen . The case will be heard by the Supreme Court on Dec. 10 and relates to pregnancy discrimination.

One way we will expand is by building on AAUW’s history of participating as amicus curiae in cases affecting women’s rights. In collaboration with the Public Policy and Government Relations department, we will seek expanded friend of the court opportunities in cases of discrimination that disadvantage women in the workplace. With this strategy, we believe that we will maximize our effectiveness and ensure that we will be heard by courts that affirmatively want our opinion on the cases and the issues before them.

Congratulations to NYS! The Association has announced that LAF giving for the state in 2008 was second in the country overall AND seventh on a per capita basis!

NYS LAF Vice President, Mildred DeWitt, is available to speak to a group about the importance of the Legal Advocacy Fund in helping women who have experienced sex discrimination in academia. Contact her for arrangements or information.

Previous LAF VP Cheryl Papa has made available many hints on working with your branches to support the Legal Advocacy Fund. She has also written a readers' theater which explains concisely what LAF is all about.
