The Action for Peace Workshops were developed by Carol Stull, a
long-time member of AAUW-NYS, a former AAUW-NYS state president,
and a mainstay of the Ithaca Branch. The primary goals are to educate and to promote dialogue regarding personal concepts of peach while encouraging personal involvement in peacemaking on the local, state and federal levels.
Carol passed away on July 16, 2003. In her honor and as a tribute
to her many years of dedicated work to AAUW, the International Federation
of University Women (IFUW), and the cause of Peace, AAUW-NYS continues
to sponsor these workshops.
May Carol's vision of a world at peace come to pass.
The following is a summary of the five workshops.
- Aspects of Peace explores the various
meanings of the word "peace" on a personal, interpersonal,
national, and global levels. Participants share their concepts
of peace and discuss fear, aggression, stereotyping, and prejudice
as obstacles to peaceful coexistence.
- Women and Others as Peacemakers identifies
the peacemakers of the world who attempt to bring about a lasting
peace through social justice. It studies their skills, values,
methods, and goals in order to establish role models for making
a personal commitment to peacemaking.
- Networking for Peace introduces the
concept of power networking among community organizations. Specific
methods to help achieve positive societal change and world peace
are explored in small groups.
- Nonviolent Conflict Resolution recognizes
that conflict is an inevitable aspect of living. Five common ways
of dealing with conflict, each with advantages and consequences,
are explored through case studies on family, community, and global
levels.
- Reconciliation deals with the barriers
to normalizing relationships and how to remove those barriers.
