AAUW was founded in 1881 by 17 college graduates in the city of Boston. It now has over 150,000 members located in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. AAUW has continued to examine the fundamental issues of the times - education, social, economic, and political – and has taken courageous positions, often far ahead of popular opinion.

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

The AAUW Educational Foundation provides funds to advance education, research and self-development for women.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and support systems for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination.

The Skaneateles Area Branch was founded in 1981. Over the years the Branch has served as a forum for women in the Auburn, Skaneateles, Marcellus, and Camillus area to gather and identify needs for which the group could unite to address. Life long education has been an ongoing theme, unifying them at both the national and local level.

In addition to supporting the Educational Foundation and the Legal Advocacy Fund, the Branch has engaged in a wide variety of outstanding projects including

How to Join

We invite individuals holding an associates or equivalent degree or higher to join us. Individuals who support our mission, but do not hold a degree, may join us at the local level.

Wednesday, September 26, 6:00 – 8:30: The Duk Lost Boys Clinic in Duk Payuel,Sudan, built this spring by Ted Kinder, Don Cross, Chuck Williams, and many other volunteers and Sudanese. Don and Chuck will share their stories, slides, and updates about this miraculous endeavor.  This meeting will launch our yearlong topic of health care. Potluck dinner (bring a dish to pass) and program, First Presbyterian Church, 97 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles. **

Wednesday, October 24, 7:00 – 8:30: The China Study:  The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health  presented by author and retired Cornell professor, T. Colin Campbell.  Library Hall,  49 E.Genesee Street, Skaneateles.  Open to the Public.

Saturday, October 27:  District 3 Fall Conference in Ithaca to celebrate LAF’s 25th anniversary, followed by an optional tour of the Johnson Musuem.  Details later.

Sunday, November 4, 1:00 – 6:00 PM:  Celebrating Women in Art”, First Presbyterian Church, 97 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles.  Open to the Public.

Sunday, December 2, 5:00 – 7:00 PM:  Holiday Party and gifts for Cayuga Seneca Community Action Agency’s Domestic Violence Intervention Project (Health care items), Cynthia and Keith MacBain’s home, 3330 County Line Road, Skaneateles

Wednesday, January 23, 6:00 – 8:30: Auburn Memorial Hospital’s new Pres./CEO, Scott Berlucchi,“Women’s Health Issues”, dinner and talk, Sherwood Inn, 26 W. Genesee St., Skan.

Wednesday, February 27, 7:00 – 9:00 PM:  Sicko”  Health commentary after showing of the film. Large basement room in the First Presbyterian Church, Skaneateles.

Saturday, March 8, International Women’s Day:  Details to follow.

Wednesday, March 26, 7:00 – 8:30:  Annual Central American health trips by local doctors and nurses who will speak about their experiences and suggest ways AAUW can help. Place to be determined.

Wednesday, April 23, 5:30 – 8:30:  Potluck dinner at Baltimore Woods, 4007 Bishop Hill Rd., Marcellus.  Kathy Palmieri will present “The Heart of the Matter”.   (Women and Cardiovascular Disease – The Life You Are Saving Could be Your Own.)  Bring a dish to pass.

Saturday, May 3, 9:30 – Noon:  Issues at Breakfast at the Skaneateles Country Club featuring  Catherine Bertini, Professor of Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Citizenship who teaches humanitarian action and nutrition policy, former Executive Director of The World Food Program for the United Nations, and current member of the Gates Foundation. She will discuss the pivotal role of women in food distribution.  

Sunday, July 13 or 20, 5:00 – 8:00.  Summer picnic will reflect upon the health care focus of the past year and choose a project for 2008-2009.  Place to be determined.

*Throughout the year, civic and social events will be added to the calendar, in addition to our health care focus.

** “Faceless in Darfur”, ceramic sculpture by Jim Slowik, will be raffled throughout the year to benefit the Duk Lost Boys Clinic in Duk Payuel, Sudan.
