AAUW was founded in 1881 by 17 college graduates in the city of Boston. It now has over 150,000 members located in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. AAUW has continued to examine the fundamental issues of the times - education, social, economic, and political – and has taken courageous positions, often far ahead of popular opinion.
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and support systems for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination.
