The American Association of University Women advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. We provide funds for advanced education, research and self-development for women and to foster equity and positive societal changes. Through the Legal Advocacy Fund we provide funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination.
The Farmingdale Branch has 19 members at present with annual dues of $56.25. The Branch was founded by Pearl Brod, a professor at the Farmingdale Agricultural College. We meet the second Tuesday of each month, from September to June, at the Farmingdale Village Hall.
We are constantly engaged in school and community projects. For three years, in conjunction with the elementary school PTA, we had a book drive. The students collected and donated thousands of books which our branch later distributed to local and neighboring community groups, churches and homes. Our branch earned a star for that project.
This past year we have received the New York State AAUW Recognition Awards for our branch project on Global Warming: "Think Global, Act Local" in conjunction with the Farmingdale Elementary School. An essay contest was held and seven 4th and 5th graders received cash awards from our branch for their winning entries. Our NYS AAUW awards were:
- GOLD - for Campus and Community Outreach
- SILVER - for membership development
- SILVER - for Visibility
This year the project has been extended to include Junior High School students. A yearly scholarship award is granted to a deserving Farmingdale High School student upon entering college.
