Who We Are:
The East Hampton branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004.
Formed in 1954 with a mandate to promote equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change, we are affiliated domestically with the state and national organizations and internationally as members of IFUW (the International Federation of University Women). We are also a non-governmental organization (NGO) of the United Nations and share its humanitarian goals.
What We Stand For:
As a branch we are committed to raising funds to:
- Support the Educational Foundation's $4,000,000 program offering fellowships and grants to women completing dissertations, doing post-doctoral research, advancing or changing careers, or re-entering the work force, and community action seed money for innovative projects that promote educastion and equity for women and girls.
- Support the Legal Advocacy Fund of the Educational Foundation which provides judicial redress for gender discrimination in higher education.
In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There are no barriers to full participation on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.
Our Programs and Acitivities:
Our programs are free of charge and are held in member' homes, the East Hampton Library, Ashawagh Hall, Bookhampton, and other local venues, as well as elsewhere on Long Island and in New York City. In the past few years they have included:
- Conversations with writers - Dava Sobel (Longitude and Galileo's Daughter), Roger Rosenblatt (Rules of Aging), and Sylvia Mendelman (Three Mile Harbor: East Hampton's Priceless Gem - A Pictorial History)
- Political - "Meet the Candidates" breakfasts in local election years
- Financial -: "What is Identity Theft and What Can You Do About It?"
- International - "Progress for Women in Afghanistan - Myth or Reality?"
- The Committee for Teaching about the UN (CTAUN) conference held annually at the UN
- Lay Ministsry at a school for the blind in Ecuador
- Issues concerning our Hispanic population on the East End
- The Arts -
- Helen Harrison (curator of the Pollack-Krasner House, "Women Artists of the WPA")
- Studio visits to sculptors Marie Kuhl and Phyllis Hammond
- Summer Course on James Joyce
- Conversation with lyricist Mae Richards and play "Cutting the Ribbons" at Guild Hall
- Health and Environment:
- Breast Cancer and our Local Environment
- Dark Skies: Reducing Light Pollution
Activities
- We support the Thorpe Residence for unwed mothers in the Bronx and sponsor children in Latin America and Africa.
- We publish a newsletter, the East Ender, and lobby our legislators on social, educational, health and other issues.
- We provide an annual scholarship for a currentt local student or a woman returning to school, supported by our End of Summer Cocktail Party Fund Raiser.

Membership:
- By joining AAUW East Hampton, you will be interacting with a group of dynamic and interesting women. You can share in the opportunities for activism at the local level and be included in all our programs and activities scheduled throughout the year. You will also automatically become a member of NYS and Natonal AAUW as well as IFUW.
- We welcome your participattion in our branch. Membership is open to anyone holding an associate's, bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
