Rockland County Branch

New York State AAUW

Updated Nov. 10, 2008

The American Association of University Women celebrated 125 years of existence in 2006-2007. Beginning with the purpose of supporting women as they pursued education careers at the university level, the Association continues to support issues that affect women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

The Rockland County branch has had a presence in the county for over fifty years, starting with branches in Nyack and Pearl River. The current county-wide organization was incorporated in 1993, joining the original two branches with the New City branch. The Rockland County branch reflects the mission of the national AAUW organization, promoting equity in advocacy, education and research. Celebrating many years of existence both as separate branches and one unit, the branch usually meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7 PM at the New City Library. Members include women leaders in education, arts government business, science and health services.

The two major parts of the national Association are the Education Foundation and the Legal Advocacy Fund. Supported by local branches, the Education Foundation provides four million dollars in grants and scholarships annually to graduate students pursuing research. Also locally supported, the Legal Advocacy Fund provides support to women and men involved in law suits targeting sexual harassment, violation of Title IX, and job discrimination. A recipient of an Education Foundation grant, Dr. Kemesha Delisser, addressed the branch on January 19, 2008.

The Rockland County branch has many programs and interest groups, including two book clubs. One of those meets the third Wednesday of every month, September to June, at the New City Library, 7:30-9PM. The second one, The Rockland Readers, meets the first Thursday of every month, 12 months of the year at Barnes and Noble, Nanuet, in the cookbook section, 1-2:30PM. Beginning February 6, 2008, Great Decisions Foreign Policy discussion group will begin monthly discussions of foreign policy issues, 7-9PM, at the New City Library. Thereafter, meetings will be held on the first Thursday Mar-May and Sept-December. The Drama Chat meets on the first Friday of every month at the New City Library at1PM. These activities are open to the public.
